Maggie's Cancer Center in Oldham was built in 2017 and is the world's first engineered hardwood building.
Maggie's in Oldham is clad in tulipwood and has an interior that is just as innovative and beautiful. Underneath the building a tree is planted which emerges through the Protan roof.
The archictects in dRMM envisioned a stunningly beautiful and tranquil building with great views of The Pennines. "The centre offers a grand view of them and their shifting cloud shadows through glass walls, as if from a millionaire’s villa, over the low roofs of Oldham", The Guardian wrote in an enthusiastic review of the project.
The tree coming through the roof, and being visible from within the building via a glass cylinder, is part of the idea of making a beautiful environment for terminal patients, as opposed to the bleakness of a traditional hospital. The Maggie's cancer programme was conceived by writer, artist and garden designer Maggie Keswick Jencks, based on her own experiences as a cancer patient.
Competition for the contract for the install of this roof was fierce, due to the nature and design of the project.
Our Protan Partner Contractor, Richmond Roofing, opted to use Protan’s EX-A fully bonded membrane, as a value engineered option to the original specification. After meetings with the architect and the main contractor, Protan was approved and selected to be the membrane of choice for the roof.
Protan’s quality solutions for exposed roofs are long-lasting, robust in all types of climates, technically sound and sustainable. Protan’s roofing solutions can be used on all types of substrates, whether new-builds or refurbishment projects. The roof coverings are quickly installed, and all joints are welded with hot air.
Green roofs are becoming more and more popular, especially in densely populated urban areas, where it’s important to use available roof space. Green areas and roof terraces increase value both for property developers and those who live in or use the buildings.
Extreme weather is the new normal. This is why Protan has developed a blue roof solution that reduces the risk of flood damage.
Protan has solid and durable systems that protect verandah and balcony floors against moisture, mould, rot and corrosion.
